The National Park Service plan of “preservation through privatization” is a violation of its public trust and will lead to commercializing one of the last natural beach areas in the Northeast.

Sandy Hook is a beautiful example of open recreational space in an urban environment.
If the NPS succeeds in its twofold purpose; using the buildings as engines of growth and getting out from under the onus of three decades of mismanagement, how can we continue to protect the fragile infrastructure of Sandy Hook and its unique environment and wildlife.
Or is Sandy Hook -- and all our other National Parks -- soon to be all about tourism dollars?
There is a need to balance the historical, environmental and educational importance of Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook, N.J., with any preservation plans for its buildings.
Our organization, Save Sandy Hook, believes the National Park Service (NPS) plan of “preservation through privatization” is a violation of its public trust and will lead to commercializing one of the last natural beach areas in the Northeast.
Granting a 60-year lease to a single real estate speculator flies in the face of 130 years of parkland conservation. Nor is it the only viable alternative to letting the buildings continue to deteriorate under the NPS mismanagement.
Privatization, no matter how well intended, will emphasize commercial tenants and their need for high volumes of traffic, adversely affecting Sandy Hook’s goals for conservation and recreation.
